    1. Trauma Is Not the Story: Understanding What Lives Beneath the Pain

We often talk about trauma as if it were a chapter in a history book—a specific event that happened “back then.” But if you are living with the aftermath of a difficult experience, you know that trauma doesn’t feel like history. It feels like a living, breathing presence in the room with you right now.

The Event vs. The Response The most important thing to understand is that trauma is not the event itself. It is not the accident, the loss, or the atmosphere of an unsafe home. Trauma is what happens inside you as a result of those events. It is the internal “shrapnel” left behind when an experience was too fast, too much, or too soon for your nervous system to process.

Why the Body Remembers While your logical mind might say, “That was ten years ago, I should be over it,” your body operates on a different clock. When we experience overwhelming stress, our survival instincts (fight, flight, or freeze) take over. If those instincts aren’t allowed to complete their cycle, the energy gets “locked” in the nervous system. This is why you might feel a sudden racing heart or a sense of dread for no apparent reason—your body is still trying to protect you from a threat it perceives as ongoing.

Healing the Present Healing is not about endlessly reliving the past or analyzing the “story” of what happened. Real recovery happens when we address the responses living in your body today. By learning to settle the nervous system and release that trapped survival energy, we don’t just change how you remember the past—we change how you experience the present.
